What is nail fungus?
Nail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is a fungal infection that affects the nails. The fungus can infect both toenails and fingernails, but it most commonly affects the toenails.
Symptoms of nail fungus:
- Nail discoloration (white, yellow, or brown)
- Thick, brittle, or deformed nails
- Nail crumbling or separation from the nail bed
- Itching or pain around the nails
- Ugly appearance of the skin around the nails
Causes of nail fungus:
- Humid and warm environments where fungus grows well
- Direct contact with an infected person or animal
- Sharing shoes or socks
- Wearing tight and non-breathable footwear
