What is nail fungus?

Nail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is a fungal infection that affects the nails. The fungus can infect both toenails and fingernails, but it most commonly affects the toenails.

Symptoms of nail fungus:

  • Nail discoloration (white, yellow, or brown)
  • Thick, brittle, or deformed nails
  • Nail crumbling or separation from the nail bed
  • Itching or pain around the nails
  • Ugly appearance of the skin around the nails

Causes of nail fungus:

  • Humid and warm environments where fungus grows well
  • Direct contact with an infected person or animal
  • Sharing shoes or socks
  • Wearing tight and non-breathable footwear
