Why does green light have a calming effect and help prevent migraines?
Our eyes convert light waves into electrical signals that travel to the cerebral cortex. These signals have a significant impact on our mood, sleep, and body responses. Blue or red light creates strong signals that strongly stimulate the brain – which can trigger migraines, headaches, or sensitivity to light.
Meanwhile, scientifically studied green light with a wavelength of 520 nm acts gently – it creates a smaller electrical signal, so it does not cause discomfort. This narrow-spectrum, gentle green light effectively stimulates the eye receptors that transmit signals to the brain, and has a calming, relaxing effect. Most importantly, it does not cause or exacerbate migraine symptoms.
Scientific justification
Recent research suggests that green light can significantly reduce the frequency and severity of migraines and headaches. The study, conducted at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center, involved 29 people with chronic or episodic migraines who had previously failed traditional treatments. After 10 weeks of daily exposure to green light (1–2 hours per day), the number of headache days decreased by as much as 60%, and the remaining headaches were milder and shorter. Participants also reported improved sleep quality, less fatigue, and better work performance. Importantly, none of the participants experienced any side effects¹².
